Introduction to the EU Legal System

This session provides an overview of the legal nature of the European Union and of the main characteristics of EU law, such as primacy and direct effect.

The presentation analyses the main legal instruments used at EU level (regulations, directives and decisions) as well as the means the Member States have in order to comply with the obligations deriving from these legal instruments. Consequences of non- (or incomplete) implementation of the EU acquis are also examined through a brief overview of the role of the Court of Justice of the European Union.
